Yet the filler material- ESPECIALLY the movies- kept portraying Krillin as significantly less competent than he usually is in the name of comic relief. I liken it a bit to what I call the "Krillin Effect." Toriyama for many years positioned Krillin as a close second to Goku, and even when Goku surpassed him, Krillin still managed to surprise in battle with his craftiness (he surprised Frieza quite a few times, for example). I guess some folks confuse him with Yajirobe, one of the true master slackers of Dragon Ball :-P (although he's a bit undervalued too, as he's a master swordsman). He just didn't dedicate his life to training and fighting like some of the others did. It's unfair, because when he did train, he trained as hard as he could. People assume that because of his seemingly daredevil-may-care attitude ("the face I put on") and the fact that he did things like stop training to play baseball (seen only in the anime, but it was Toriyama's idea) and not stay behind with Tenshinhan and Chaozu to train further with King Kai(o), that somehow makes him a slacker. ![]()
